Alternate title?

When Roger Federer was leading 5-4 in the second set, and was the score was 30-30, I got this idea for the title of the blog – "New Mom and New Dad create New History". And then it happened! Del Potro challeneged a line call, and his challenge was upheld. Federer did not like the decision, got distracted and lost that game! It has happened many times before that a single point changed the face of the whole game, and for this game this was it. If you watched the match, you would have observed the sagging body language of Del Potro till that point of time (even when he challenged the point), and then it all changed in a moment!

Del Potro went on to win that set in the tie-breaker, and then gave a very tough fight in the next two sets too. With the crowd backing him up so well, his spirits were at an all time high in the 5th set and it showed very well in the set. Federer was at his worst in the 5th set, even bringing back the memories of his disastrous 5th set in the Australian Open.

And so now I did not know what title to have for this blog, and hence that name :D. History was still created though, and how! Del Potro beat both Nadal and Federer to win this title! I am sure that must have been the dream of many many tennis players in the world, and Del Potro realised this dream. He is the first player to have beaten Federer in a Grand Slam Final other than Nadal. And so finally, the players of the world are beginning to crack the Federer Puzzle J.

Kim Clijsters created history by becoming the first mom to win the US Open title. Her comeback story will surely be made into a movie one day! To retire from the game, give birth to a kid, then decide to comeback to tennis, and almost immediately to go on and win US Open – can you get a better script than this?

Also, I am a fan of Leander Paes and it gave me extra pleasure to see him win too! Incidentally, even when they won the French Open, they lost the first set, only to bounce back in the next two sets.

So, thus ends the US Open and welcome to new championsJ.

So many points, so little time!: Sep 5-12

  1. The UPA government is now on a money saving spree. Finance Minister has introduced multiple austerity measures, and one of the first things he did was to ask the Foreign Minister S.M.Krishna and his deputy Shashi Tharoor to vacate the 5 star hotels they are staying in, and move into their state bhavans. But then guess what, both of them were actually paying from their own pockets for the last 3 months of their stay in these hotels! Shashi Tharoor was paying Rs. 40,000 per day and SMK was paying Rs. 1,00,000 per day (yes, per day)! Multiply that by 100, and that is what these ministers have paid from their pockets so far! I think it is high time I petition them for a loan ;-).
  2. The fight in the AP congress to make Jagan Mohan Reddy is assuming comical proportions. YSR's best friend and confidant, KVP Ramchander Rao was in Delhi almost this whole week. He met Veerappa Moily, and then met Ahmed Patel; and then he had to meet Digvijay Singh; at this point of time, he was advised to meet Pranab Mukherjee also; then he was allowed to meet Sonia Gandhi, after which he met the Prime Minister. Then he met Ahmed Patel and Veerappa Moily together; and then Pranab and Sonia together. And then he met Ahmed Patel alone, and then … phew, I lost track! I heard that Ekta Kapoor is planning to move away from Saas Bahu series and is searching for another dragging storyline. Ekta, the story is unravelling right in front of you, just go and grab it!
  3. One of the first things the management of Jet Airways did after the pilots took en masse sick leave was to send doctors to their homes! LOL, I mean, seriously it could not think of a better thing to do? Is it only me, or does anyone else think that 4 days is a ridiculously long time to take to solve this kind of a crisis. Especially when not just the passengers were affected, Jet Airways balance books were affected too. Government strikes have ended far more quickly than this one!
  4. The central government has announced that CBSE X board exams will be scrapped from 2011 onwards. It has also introduced a new grading system to evaluate students, thus signalling the end of the percentage system. A good beginning to the reform process, but this blog's favorite jounralist, Sagarika Ghose is not content with this move. In her new blog, she bombards us with lofty idealistic "out of the box" solutions to overhaul our education system. Apparently we have to create "pedagogic commandos" from our retired work force to take the system to a new level. I have an idea. Sagarika, why don't you retire voluntarily and spearhead this force? Atleast then, we will be spared of your lectures!
  5. Last week, it was Somdev and Force India that grabbed headlines, and this week it was Pankaj Advani and Vijender Singh. Pankaj won the World Billiards Championship beating long time champion Mike Russell, becoming the second Indian after Geet Sethi to win it. Vijender reached the semi-finals of the world boxing championship. Oops, I forgot, our cricket team was "world number 1" for a full 24 hours, and I don't have to tell you the media's reactions!
  6. 09/09/09 occurred this week, and it gave two kids their 15 minutes (or should we say, 9 minutes ;-) ) of fame! Apparently, these two kids were born at 9:09am on 09/09/09! News is not yet out on who were born at 9:09pm, so stay tuned: D

70,00,00,00,00,000

Wondering what it is?

That is the unofficial maximum estimate of black money stashed away in Swiss bank accounts! According to estimates mentioned in an editorial here, (unofficial ofcourse), anywhere between 30 lakh crores to 70 lakh crores might be available in the swiss bank accounts! It took me a while to just count the zeroes, when did all these people even find time to count their money?!?!

Will we ever get answers?

YSR's death again threw up multiple questions on the efficacy of our system while dealing with crises. Before going into the whole whether-the-helicopter-was-fit-for-flying thing, I want to make few points:

  • The response of the state government has been disappointing at the least and appalling at times. YSR's chopper lost contact with ATC at around 9:15am. Only at 3:45 pm, it was announced to the world that he is missing. And the request for local tribes to help in search operations went out then. It was raining heavily, and obviously at around 4, the dense forests of Nallamalla will be very dark. And in a couple of hours more, it will be pitch dark. Why then, there was so much delay in announcing this?
  • How come no alarm was raised till some official realised 15 minutes past the landing time that something might have gone wrong? If the ATC loses signal, how come no one was notified? Or did they just think the helicopter will find its own way, and losing the signal of a chopper was normal?
  • What transpired between 10:45am (when it was realised that something went wrong) and 3:45pm? What actions were taken, if any? Why were senior officials also telling that the CM was safe and sound? Was it a deliberate ploy to divert attention? Or was it that no one really knew anything about what was happening?
  • The Home Minister was not even seen in the initial briefings, why this lapse? Reprts also suggested that the DGP met with K.V.P.Ramachandra Rao when this news broke out. How come such a thing can even happen? Does the DGP think he can so conviently ignore the Home Minister?
  • And the most baffling fact of all. How come the Home Minister comes in a convoy of 4 buses along with MLA's/ministers, while the DGP flies in an helicopter from Hyderabad to Kadapa?
  • I am not questioning why the police did not make proper arrangements for the 4 buses to reach Kadapa… in such a situation I think it difficult to regulate traffic as well as control the crowd, but the DGP's startling behaviour during this whole saga is disgusting to note. He did not even have the minimum courtesy of making sure his boss reaches the funeral place. This kind of behaviour is not new to this person, but somehow he manages to cross the limits multiple times.
  • Now, the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) on the helicopter did not send out any signals. And because it did not send out any signals, the aviation corporation very confidently put out a statement saying that the helicopter would not have crashed. Guess what, it was revealed in today's newspapers that the ELT's frequencies gloally were updated to 406MHz and this particular ELT was still transmitting at 121.5 and 243 MHz! Isn't this shameful? Who will take responsibility for this carelessness? In this particular case, we might not have saved the passengers, but atleast the search would have been over much earlier.
  • There is no satellite phone on the chopper! I mean, doesn't it sound "elementary, my dear Watson"?
  • And now, they may not be able to decode the flight recorder data here it seems!

In hindsight, it is easier to pinpoint many more such mistakes before the flight took off. What is however disturbing is that our response to such disasters is disastrous to say the least. And the saddest part is that all those responsible for such tardiness will go scot-free. The worst legacy YSR leaves behind is a take-it-easy, go-slow approach on many matters. Sadly, it took his death for us to realise how deep it has crept into.

So many points, so little time! : Aug.30-Sep.5

1. The Chief Minister's body did not even reach his Hyderabad residence, and the AP Congress leaders started their internal bickering. It is one thing to demand that YSR's son be made the CM in a fit of emotion. We all can understand that there are die hard fans in the cabinet as well as the MLA's for YSR, and it is but natural that they want Jaganmohan Reddy to become the CM. What however is disgusting to note is that the Chief Whip went about collecting the signatures of MLA's who were ready to propose Jagan's name. And the drama did not stop there. Names of those who apparently refused to sign were selectively leaked, and then those MLA's had to face the embarassing situation of clarifying to the media that they were never approached in the first place. The next day, a minister refuses to be part of a cabinet that is not led by Jagan. Later another MLA declares that they will create law and order problems in the state if Jagan is not made the CM. All this has happened even before the CM was laid to rest. Leave alone waiting till the moruning period is over, the tactics these politicians have resorted to even before the cremation makes one feel ashamed to have elected them in the first place. No wonder, most middle class people have such an aversion to politicians.

2. The normally over enthusiastic media has been very measured in its continous coverage for more than 60 hours, except TV9. Never in the history of the country has there been a 24 hour search for a missing CM, and the local media did its best not to encourage the rumour mongers. Given the sensitivity of the situation, the local media even took more time than the national media to announce the death of the CM. TV9, as its wont, tried to capitalize on a tragedy again. We are all used to the media going overboard on many small issues, but somehow I cannot digest the fact that some of the media continously tries to capitalize on such tragedies too.

3. Tennis history was "created" this week for India. Somdev and Sania Mirza went into the second round of the US open, thus marking it the first time when Indians found representation in the second round of a Grand slam in both men's and women's singles. How Sania lost in the second round is best not discussed: D. However, Somdev can learn a world of good from the experiences of Sania. Sania showed so much promise when she began but slowly fizzled out because of injuries and other activities. It is our earnest hope that Somdev will rise up in the rankings too, but it is very important to keep focussing on the game. The rest will automatically follow.

4. Even before the Force India's celebrations ended, came the news that Fisichella was relieved and was allowed to go join Ferari. It looks like it has been a week of mixed emotions for Force India. However, we should hope that the team as such learnt a lot from the Belgian Grand Prix experience and other drivers will continue to follow suit (in winning for the team, not in leaving it ;-) ).

5. At last, I could find something similar between Japan and India ;-). The Liberal Democratic Party, which lost the latest election in the country, has ruled the country for all but one year since 1955! Nearly 54 years! A la congress in India :D. This time, the main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Japan won the elections with huge majority. Let's only hope that this party will not become like the present BJP!

The hard reality…

So much has been written and so much has been shown about the life and times of the departed Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, YSR. There is really nothing much I can add to the immense flow of tributes and information for the past 48 hours.

The fact that I have multiple ideological differences with him does not allow me to forget the fact that this leader rose from the people and lived for them. It is no mean task to become a representative for a constituency. To be able to sustain and improve with each victory is certainly much more difficult than just winning once. Only those who rise from the bottom of the hierarchy can quickly catch the pulse of the people and read the mind of the cadre. We have some very fine examples of such leaders in the country, and surely YSR is on that list.

He took on the mighty and the then percieved to be invincible Chandrababu Naidu head on and went on to become the Chief Minister in 2004, and became solely responsible for literally holding the party's hand and guiding it through the 5 years of power. In his term, the internal bickering that has been the trademark of the Congress party for decades died slowly. We can now clearly see how his absence for just two days is bringing back memories of the old Congress. Single handedly, he lead the party through another election victory becoming the first CM in the history of the state to complete a full five year term and then lead the party to victory again.

Irony of fate is sometimes just very cruel. The same rains that co-operated with him for his entire first term in governance have become the bane when it came to his own life. To have lived like that and to have died this way is just a grim reminder of the unfairness of life.

The controversies surrounding him notwithstanding, it is the truth that he has influenced tens of lakhs of people; it is a fact that about one and half crore people accepted him as their leader; unfortunately, such a leader will be hard to replace, that is the hard reality.

PS: Telugu article is here.

Child reporters..

Interesting fact happening in some villages. With the aid of UNICEF, children are being trained to report various issues they are facing. They then write a newspaper with all those issues, and paste them at important places in the village. Read the following link to know more..
