SPL !

So, we heard of EPL. And then came along IPL. And now I am presenting to you all, ladies and gentleman, the SPL!

Wondering what it is? It is the Solapur Premier League!!! I was in Solapur recently, and we had to stop our cab near the town's entrance to wait for the other cabs to join us and the first thing that caught our eye was these hoardings of the "Solapur Premier League"!

LOL! The Man of the Match in the final wins a mobile phone, prompting a friend to wonder if the best fielder/batsman/bowler would be given SIM cards! There was a Women's Show Match also organised just before the finals! Again, LOL!

The Congress party was organising this tournament, and now that's a first in this country! At the end of it all, we realised that this is indeed a commendable effort and am sure all players would have had unlimited fun (not sure how many people watch the matches ;-)).

We missed the "finals" by just 12 hours, otherwise we would have given the pitch and the match report too: D :D. You can click on the picture for a better view.

So many points, so little time! : Aug 9-15

1. Here's a important lesson Mayawati can learn, about statues. Diplomacy and goodwill can take a good step forward by invoking art and artists alike. Karnataka and Tamilnadu showed the way this week, when the statue of Tamil poet Thiruvallar was unveiled in Bengaluru and that of Kannada poet Sarvagna was unveiled in Chennai, in the presence of both the Chief Ministers of the State. This step might not solve long standing disputes, but an air of goodwill and cultural exchanges can only do more good than harm. Was Mayawati watching? Or was she still busy finalizing the latest design of her statues, along with those of the elephants?

2. In a court room, the presiding officer sentences a lady to three years rigorous imprisonment. Immediately, (yes, literally immediately), the Home Minister of the country walks into the room, declares that the sentence is being reduced to 18 months, and also that she will be under house arrest and will not face rigorous imprisonement. And then he leaves the courtroom. Does this sound like a scene from a comedy movie? Or maybe a movie of the colonial times? Well, then here's the truth. This farce happened in this day, this age! The lady is none other that Aung San Suu Kyi of Mynammar, who pioneered the democratic movement in that country and therefore was placed under house arrest 14 years back. Why was she sentenced further? Because at the fag end of her 14 year arrest, an white man apparently swam across the lake beside her house, and entered into it. Therefore, she is guilty of violating the terms of "house arrest". And now with her requiring to spend another 18 months in her house, the 2010 "elections" in the country will remain another farce. All the world leaders have religiously "condemned" this move, and then proceeded to do... nothing.

3. See, I am a little poor at understanding economics. I was taught that if prices increase, inflation increases and vice versa. So, if inflation is stable, then prices are stable. So now, why then are prices of essential commodities so high if inflation is -1.74% ?! I have tried my best to figure out why there is an anomoly between what I read and what actually is happening! All I could find was that inflation is calculated with respect to the same period last year too, and therefore it is going into negative because last year it was in double digits. Confused, right? Here's more to confuse you... Economists say deflation is bad, and then the government says there is nothing to worry. All theory says deflation is bad, but no one just bothers to explain in detail what the whole fuss about inflation/deflation is all about. We were told not to worry when inflation was in double digits. And then we are told not to worry when it is negative. So here's my question - when exactly is it that we should be worried?

4. Sagarika Ghose seems be infected with "frisk flu". Ok, excuse my poor(est) joke, but that's what it seems like. On her latest blog, she talks about some oaths. Apparently, if I understood the blog correctly, we all should take a oath that we will stand in queue while at airports. But Sagarika, we already do that, so why do we have to take an oath? Or did you want the leaders to take that oath? If so, your naivety is ... well, plain naive! And pray why you are not answering this question - How can you guarantee that the official who frisked Dr. Kalam was not a security risk to him?

5. Here's an interesting tidbit. In Montreal this week, for the first time an any ATP tournament, the top 8 ranked players of the world have reached the Quarter Finals. There have been tournaments in which the top 8 seeds reached the quarterfinals, but this is the first time the top 8 ranked players in the world reached this stage. More than it being interesting, I was surprised that this never happened before. Nevertheless, feels good to see a first happening in your favorite sport :)

Etched in memory…

Some incidents are etched in your memory. Even if you suffer from memory loss!

Scene 1: On August 12, 2002, Raju and me arrive at the Columbus airport and wait for our seniors to come pick us up. And then I see an unsuspecting soul, laced with innonence, wearing a yellow t-shirt, looking lost, waiting in anticipation, and clearly tired to the core. He was also going to come to our University and my first impression – it will be interesting to how he will get along. And the impression was further strengthened by the fact that he just slept through the entire 1 ½ ride to the campus. Only later did we realise, we will take that same road some 1000 times!

Cut. One year later.

Scene 2: I wear a yellow t-shirt (not the same as his ;-), cream colour bermuda, with a white towel over my shoulder and drive a U-Haul (for those who don't know what it is, it is like a mini truck) to his house (Jai Balayya ;-) ). It is impossible to describe his face when he saw me getting down like that. Literally, you had to see it to enjoy it! After he recovered, we load all their crap into the U-haul and then add it to the crap already present in our house! Yes, we become room mates!

From wondering how he will get along to becoming roomies, all in one year! Raju comes back after his India vacation, Rajesh joins us along with Sisir, Ravi Kiran shifts to our university, and so we all began our life as roomies! And boy, what a life it has been for the next 18 months! Without doubt, some of the best years of not just my student life, but my life too. We will save all that for another blog, another time :D

The reason I was reminded of these two incidents is that all five of us had a conference call in the morning, and I couldn't help getting nostalgic. And these two events just stand out in the innumerable number of such experiences I've had during my stay at Ohio University. I generally have inkling to look back and write, 10 years down the lane. So, three more years, and I will pen down all my experiences. Till then, if you want to read my 10 year story after B.Tech, click here!

So many points, so little time: Aug 2-8

1. Business Line ran a story recently on how Santoor Soap successfully followed the same formula to run its ad for the last 16 years. The Chief Minister of AP, YSR seems to be following a similar strategy. Before you get wild ideas, I am not talking about the glow on his skin but his idea of following the same strategy in the Assembly for the past 5 years. Irrespective of the situation/issue/problem/question at hand, YSR will very conveniently divert the topic towards the Leader of the Opposition, Chandrababu Naidu! A question on price rise will prompt the CM to challenge a referendum. A discussion on fuel tax led the CM to denounce Naidu for criticizing EVM's (Yes, from fuel tax to EVM's, all in 5 minutes!). A question on prices of dal ended up with the CM questioning about the prices of Onions when Naidu was the Chief Minister! The CM is content in gloating over the fact that the mistakes he is making have been made by Naidu too, and therefore Naidu lost every right to question him. Never before has any opposition been treated with such utter disdain. The people have already given their verdict on Naidu, then why are you repeating the same mistakes, Mr. CM?

2. Speaking of long standing conflicts, the brothers are at it again! Anil and Mukesh Ambani are warring again, and this time they have decided to involve politicians too. The fight is about pricing and supply of gas. Briefly put (it's not easy to put it briefly) both the brothers agreed that Mukesh will sell gas to Anil at @2.34 per unit. The minimum rate, according to the government, is $4.3 per unit. There is a case pending in Supreme Court now, and Anil Ambani suddenly accuses the Union Oil Minister of colluding along with his brother to ensure that the supply of the gas will take more time. And since Anil Ambani is involved, the Samajwadi Party is crying hoarse at the top of its voice. Luckily for us, Amar Singh is not in the country; otherwise we would have been treated to the spectacle of his daily TV appearances. Nevertheless, he still wrote from "his hospital bed" from a remote place called Singapore, deploring the way in which Congress is treating his party! Well Anil, you have influenced policy for a number of years at the cost of other businesses, so how about being on the receiving end for once? :P

3. Talk about inheritance in politics. Buta Singh's son, Sarabjit Singh has undoubtedly inherited his father's political legacy. This week, he was caught accepting bribe of about Rs. 1 crore! And now Buta Singh is crying foul! What can be more ironic than Buta Singh crying foul over corruption charges? Mr. Buta Singh, we all know your constant quest to evolve innovative means to get corrupt, and quite frankly, we have even lost count as to how many times your "opponents have conspired against you", so why not take a break or better yet, why don't you just retire?

4. In our country, monuments are missing. Yes, you heard it right, they are missing. No, PC.Sorcar Jr did not vanish them into thin air. Urbanisation, commercialization, and development activities ensured that they went missing! In an editorial, The Hindu has bought some startling facts to the fore. Read it here, to know more about it yourself. If not now, when else will we protect our monuments?

5. 3 accused of the 2003 Mumbai blasts case have been awarded the death penalty. A cartoon in a Telugu daily said it all – the accused come out of the court happily and one guy tells the other, "now that we have been given the death penalty, we will not die"!

6. And finally to end this on a laughable note- Ajmal Kasab was wondering if anyone would tie a rakhi to him! The ultimate torture would have been if Rakhi Sawant were to tie rakhi to him – we should see who will break down first :D!

“Billions of Blistering Barnacles”

I just came to know that Suppandi is on twitter! People really get very creative :- ).

My "neighbour" at office just told me that, and we started going down memory lane about the good old comics! Supandi's stupidity, Shikari Shambu's extreme good luck that makes him look like an amazing hunter, innocence of Ramu and Shamu are somethings that immediately come to mind while remembering Tinkle!

Next on the list was Chacha Chowdary whose "brain works faster than a computer". And Chacha Chowdary owes his stupendous success to his associate from Jupiter, Sabu, whose anger can make "volcanoes erupt on Jupiter". Entertainment, which also aided imagination, was fitted so well into compact books and I doubt if we can ever find replacements to these books.

When we were kids, my younger brother even ran a small library (named "Cute Library", and with a rent of Re.1 per day) with a huge collection of all these comics. And my all time favorite line from any comic is that of Captain Haddock from Tintin – Billions of blistering barnacles! Till date, I don't know what it even means, but it just epitomises his anger so well :D :D!

I don't know if kids today read as much as we did, but if they are not, then they sure are missing out on so much fun!

Why Russians didn’t go to the moon first?

Right from the days when I started studying in school about space explorations, there was one question that kept bothering me. If the Russians could send the first satellite into space, first animal into space, first man into space, then why not onto the moon?

Surprisingly, after so many years, I found some answers in a recent article published in The Hindu. Click here for the full article, and some interesting reasoning as to why US went there first.

( In telugu )

I recently found out that writing in telugu is much easier on blogspot, than using any other script! Hence, have decided to document my thoughts in telugu atleast once a week! Sometimes (actually many times) it is easier to think in your mother toungue, and now I realised it is easier to type too! Here we go..

Is the August 15th weekend a long weekend?

According to CNN-IBN, it is !!

Now, here's the first question that will come to the mind. August 15th is a Saturday? How come a holiday that comes on a saturday qualifies as "long weekend" holiday. By this standard, holidays that come on fridays and mondays are longer weekends, and those falling on thursdays and tuesdays are longest weekends I guess!

Well, if you are wondering what made CNN-IBN to harp so much on this "long weekend", it is the private airliners call for a strike on the 18th of August. Instead of concentrating on the claims of the airlines, CNN-IBN continues to mislead the viewers saying that this will hurt the plans for the long weekend ( it doesn't matter to them that 18th is actually a tuesday) and they somehow managed to find some "passengers" who are equally sad that their "long weekend" plans might go awry!

On any day that the airlines decide to go on strike, it is a fact that the general public will be put to great discomfort. Instead of concentrating on why the airlines were asking government to cut taxes; instead of debating the ridicule with which the airlines announced a strike; and instead of putting forth actual information, the media went into a tizzy again and sought to dramatize the situation beyond one's comprehension!

The airlines did NOT ask for government money to bail them out. If they did, that would have been a little outrageous, but they asked for a reduction in taxes. Now, if it is needed or not is the issue that needs to discussed, but what is shocking is that they unilaterally announce a strike (as this piece is being written, news is flashing that Spice Jet is withdrawing from the strike). The media just did not give breathing space for anyone to react. As if the strike was tomorrow, and the earth was to stop rotating if these flights didn't go up in the air, the news readers "emotions" kept changing from shock to disgust. All because the "long weekend" plans have gone awry!
